Wisdom Teeth

These teeth are also known as your third molars and it is common for individuals to develop these teeth by their mid-teens. There are three types of impacted wisdom teeth, soft tissue impacted, partial bony impacted and full bony impacted, which are the most common. Impacted teeth cannot erupt because they are blocked by bone and gum tissue. The most common problem is the pain associated with these teeth trying to erupt. When these teeth are not removed, other problems such as infections, damage to adjacent teeth, cysts and tumors commonly occur.

Wisdom Teeth Presentation

To provide you with a better understanding of wisdom teeth, we have provided the following multimedia presentation. Many common questions pertaining to wisdom teeth are discussed.

Oral Examination

The patient is first seen in our office for an evaluation. Dr. Angell will review the patient health history, evaluate the wisdom teeth presence and position on an x-ray, do an oral examination and discuss the extraction procedure and types of anesthesia available. Anesthesia is an important part of the extraction process. Patients will be offered either local anesthesia and, in addition, you may choose Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen sedation, also known as “laughing gas” or Intravenous (I.V.) sedation. Dr. Angell will be able to answer any questions regarding the best anesthesia for your procedure. Your evaluation appointment will take 20-30 minutes.

Removal

Before leaving the office you will be given an estimate of the cost for your procedures and, if you would like, you will be able to schedule the surgical appointment with our technical staff. These surgical appointments are done in our office and last from 40-60 minutes.

General Extractions

For any patient requiring extraction of two or more teeth or if the patient has a complex medical history, the process will be the same as for the oral evalaution and removal as stated in the above paragraphs.

Our services are provided in an environment of optimum safety that utilizes modern monitoring equipment and staff who are experienced in anesthesia techniques. Our staff is C.P.R., A.E.D. certified. Dr. Angell is C.P.R., A.E.D. and A.C.L.S. certified.
