After Bone Grafts

Do not disturb or touch the wound.

 

BLEEDING: 
Some oozing or bleeding is normal for 24 hours.

 

SWELLING:
Apply ice packs to the outside of your face over the surgical area immediately upon your return home. Packs should be used in 20 minutes ON and five (5) OFF cycle while you are awake for the first 24 hours.

 

PAIN CONTROL: 
Postoperative pain is usually minimal. It is important that you do not take pain medicine on an empty stomach.

·        For moderate pain, one or two tablets of Tylenol or Extra Strength Tylenol may be taken every six hours or Ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil) two to four 200mg tablets may be taken every six hours.

·        For severe pain, take the prescribed medication as directed. While you are taking this medication, do not drive or operate machinery and avoid alcoholic beverages.

 

 ANTIBIOTICS:
Start taking your antibiotic medication the day before and continue taking it as directed.

 

If you have any reaction to these medications, such as hives, rash, nausea or vomiting, STOP taking them and call our office.

 

DIET:

a.       Day 1 and 2: Clear and Full liquids, such as clear juices, broth or jello, ice cream, creamed soups

b.      Days 3 and 7: Progress to soft foods, such as mashed potatoes, pasta, pudding

c.       Resume a general diet avoiding crunchy, nutty or foods with seeds or hulls.

 

ORAL HYGEINE:
Use warm salt-water rinses after eating. Dissolve 1-teaspoon salt in 8 oz. of warm water and gently rinse.  If PERIDEX mouth rinse is prescribed begin using as directed on the 2nd day. Do NOT use commercial mouthwashes or sprays.  After 24 hours you begin brushing gently but avoid surgical area until instructed by doctor.

 

DENTURES:
Flippers, partial or full dentures should not be worn until instructed by the doctor.

 

SLEEP:
For the first 2 nights use an elevated headrest such as an extra pillow to help reduce swelling. You may want to use a towel or plastic covering to protect your pillow.

 

DO NOT SMOKE: Smoking can cause your bone graft to fail.
